Can I recover the data myself?
The short answer is possibily you can - as long as:-

1. The device is not at, or close to, the point of mechanical failure.
2. You must also be a fairly proficient computer user.

We often receive disks when the owner has attempted recovery themselves and in the process worsened the chance of successful recovery. Software recovery tools traverse the entire disk before recovery can be achieved, this can cause unnecessary use of a failing disk. Professional recovery equipment can focus directly on your required data.

Never install recovery software to the disk itself. We also recommend you perform your recovery attempts against a copy of your data if possible.

If you have decided to attempt recovery yourself please follow these guidelines.

  • For file-system problems on disks (or other devices), which do not involve media failure, we recommend either GetDataBack from Runtime Software or R-Studio from R-tools Technology Inc. The great thing about these products is you can download an evaluation version which will determine what can be recovered prior to purchase. Repeat these must not be installed to the disk itself - otherwise you may overwrite your data.

  • For corrupt MS Office document issues which do not involve media failure please refer to our MS Office guidelines.

  • For CD/DVD recovery, where the media is not physically damaged, please download an evaluation copy of IsoBuster. Again it will display what data can be recovered before you need to purchase the product.
